Major fire in Leith Walk takeaway

Tail End Fire

Around 10am today a serious fire broke out on Leith Walk at the Tail End Fish and Chip bar.

Around 40 Fire fighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze that caused the closure of Leith Walk southbound for around 3 hours, and significant traffic disruption in the area. Fortunately, no-one was injured or killed. According to Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade, the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but it is suspected that it was caused by a deep fat fryer in the shop.

It was interesting to see how local people shared information about the event on Twitter. Mark Sheffield, posted the photo above to Twitter and Flickr at about 11am, with various other local Tweeters, like Louise, Weibke Burnett, and Yonmei as well as ourselves, helping to share updates and news about the incident.

We’d also like to congratulate the people behind the official twitter feeds of Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade, City of Edinburgh Council, and Edinburgh Coach Lines for using Twitter so effectively to share updates on the incident and how it was affecting local services.

The Tail Ends “posh chip suppers” will be missed by many.
