It’s sad to see the last few remaining historic lampposts in the Kirk Street area being left to rust by the council. Given that the ornate poles bear the Leith Coat of Arms and the ‘Persevere’ motto, it seems somewhat ironic that those responsible for their upkeep would clearly prefer to see them decay into oblivion.
This is no doubt in the hope that Health and Safety will allow them to be replaced with bland and boring “anywhere” lighting columns, that are no doubt cheaper to maintain, in due course.
Here’s the detail of one on Casselbank Street outside the Destiny Church:
Lamposts from the same era have been given a good lick of point along the Shore, surely all these lighting columns deserve the same treatment?
We’ve called for these rusting poles to be restored and repainted as soon as possible using fix my street. If you think these lampposts are worth persevering with then you should raise the issue with the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership staff.
