The fact that the council street cleansing teams seem to point blank refuse to make regular refuse collections from anywhere without easy vehicle access causes issues in many green spaces in the city.
And one of those places is the North Edinburgh Cycle path where a lack of bins does nothing to minimise litter problems or reduce the phenomenon of what one New Leith blogger dubs “pre-bagged poo.”
Step forwards The Black Bag People! An example of the fabled Big Society in action – local volunteers have been quietly making up for this inexplicable gap in local authority services by putting up black bags along the Water of Leith path and emtying them when they get full. And they’ve been doing it for months. If not years.
Are the black bag people one? Are they legion? Whoever you are. We salute you. And if you want to get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.
In the meantime, you can help the Black Bag People by making sure you put your litter in a bin. Even if that means carrying it until you get to a road.
