Wardie bay residents were surprised to find more than two hundred tyres wash ashore on the beach near their homes just days before Christmas.
After a few hardy locals pitched in to gather them all together at the top of the beach, speculation has begun over the source of the tyres.
Some of them are apparently covered in barnacles, indicating that they may have been in the sea for some time, whilst others have no such covering.
Either way, it’s likely that they were dumped nearby by some unscrupulous dumb dumper. From what we understand, the small beach next to Granton Harbour belongs to the Crown Estate, and the council Environmental Wardens have been to the site to investigate – as this tweet shows:

Local resident Jan Bakker, who took the photos in this blog post and helped to organise the quick impromptu tidy-up said: “It’s bizzare, where did they come from? And why do they have to end up on our beach?”
This post was updated with new information on the ownership of the beach on 28th of December.
