A Spacehopper race and a 5km fun run form the focus for a new Health and Fitness Festival to be staged in Victoria Park.
The event, planned for August the 10th, is a fundraiser for local charity Looking After Our Elderly, which has been best known for organising a very successful Christmas Gift camapaign.
Charity Director, Kirsty Smith said:
“We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of people at Christmas and collected over 2500 single gifts, allowing us to make up 800 gift packs, which we gave to older people living on their own and in care homes.
“The Christmas campaign was amazing but that only helped to bring happiness to a lot of older people for just one day.
Our elderly are too easily forgotten. We want people to remember our older people all the time and to recognise the important and active part of the community they play. By holding this festival we hope to unite all our local generations, create a social hub with the common goal of having fun, being active and enjoying yourself.”
The festival is free for everyone to come along, but there will be a small joining fee to participate in the 5k run. Kirsty is particularly keen to hear from local businesses, or other organisations, that may be willing to pay to set-up a stall.
Applications for stalls are open to all forms of business; there is not a requirement to provide a health or fitness focus.
Kirsty adds: “We’ve had a lot of support from the local community so far but we still need more local businesses to sign up and participate. You don’t need to dig deep, just get involved.”
All the proceeds from the festival will go towards the Looking After Our Elderly charity and Christmas giving campaign 2013.
