Dog fouling remains the number
two one scourge of many of our public spaces, at least if you measure how annoyed local people seem to get by it.
Now a Broughton based company, Wastesites Limited, has persuaded councillors that they have a solution to this foul torment. And it’s apparently ad funded bins that look approximately like the ones in the picture above.
Backers of the idea, dubbed PRIDE (Promoting Responsibility in Dog Exercise) have surveyed 48 Edinburgh folk, 95.8% of whom apparently regarded the proposed bins as “stylish and user friendly.” This was sufficient to persuade councillors to agree to a plan that will see around 100 bins installed at no cost to the council throughout the city.
The bins will also incorporate a dispenser of free poo bags for careless dog owners who go out without their own.
Locally, Victoria Park is listed as the only green space that has been chosen as a site for one of the ad-funded bins.
According to the council report: “Operating costs will be funded through sponsorship fees obtained from Pride’s private sector partners. In return, sponsors will receive a number of benefits including relevant messaging and logo placement on the bins.
“All sponsoring partners will be relevant with a declared interest in dogs and/or the wider community. Messaging carried on the bins will be professional, appropriate and respectful of the surrounding environment.
“At this time, the private sector sponsors are still to be confirmed.”
Arguably, it is Leithers who frequent the parks where the bins will not be sited who will get the most benefit. The new sposnosred bins are to be placed on existing council bin sites.
This means that there will be an extra 100 bins that aren’t plastered with advertising available for use by the council in other places.
So for anyone who prefers to spend time in a public park that is free from commercial messages, then Leith Links, Pilrig Park, Montgomery Street Park and Dalmeny Street Park look set to remain advertising, if not dog poo free, for at least another year.
And of course, this all begs the question – which company would you like to see sponsoring dog poo bins in Leith?
