This is what the proposed plans for two new hotels on the Shrubhill site will look like from Leith Walk. Anything is an improvement on the current situation and it’s pleasing to see that the plans will bring active shopfronts to this part of Leith Walk. Behind the Leith Walk facade there will be a ‘city square’ that will presumably mean most rooms in the two proposed hotels will have some sort of a view South towards the city centre. One of the hotels will be a ‘budget hotel.’ whilst the other one will be three star.
Overall, this redevelopment is surely a good thing, and an indication that good things are still to come for Leith Walk, despite the current pain caused by the tram works.
Could the design be more inspiring though? Although our more conservative readers will be pleased to see that it is to be faced with the usual Edinburgh sandstone, this is not a ‘landmark’ building is it?
You can see all the details for the application (09/01872/FUL), and submit comments or objections on-line by clicking here. Beware though – the pdf files submitted by the developer are huge, and clearly a barrier to anyone interested in accessing them. Is this something CEC planning could address?
